Handicraft textile from Egypt

The cotton is a natural fibre appreciated for its comfort, softness and lightness. Many kinds of cotton fibres exist; the Egyptian cotton is one of them. It is well known as a high quality cotton, of which are made long thin and yet strong threads. The final material has a soft and satiny aspect, but it is solid and resistant. All the products made of cotton coming from Egypt are not labelled as "made of Egyptian cotton", this label depends on the origin of the cotton seed that has been used. But the cotton from Egypt remains a good quality one and is one of the major economical activities of the country.

In some areas of Cairo, the handicraftsmen are still hand weaving the cotton, using the traditional weaving machine. In these areas, weaving is the main activity of the rural families and their major source of revenues.

Multicoloured scarves

Multicoloured scarves...

Our cotton, silk, natural viscose or linen scarves are made in a village near Louxor, in which the manual textile production is a traditional activity. The weavers of the village are still using the ancient techniques of hand-weaving. They draw their inspiration from traditional Egyptian designs to create modern and high quality scarves. Their creations are comfortable and easy to clean.

Embroidered clothes

Embroidered clothes...

Our tuniques are inspired from the traditional Egyptian galabeya, the long dress wore by both men and women. They are embroidered with cotton or silk, on the front, the bottom or the sleeves; the colours are bright and stroke with golden or silvery threads. We also offer you embroidered and colourful pyjamas, as well as embroidered shirts.

Bags and accessories

Bags and accessories...

Here the Egyptian textile has been inspired from the Bedouin style and is used in the making of products in high quality quilted or laminated material. We offer you toilet bags, make up bags, pencil or glasses, purses, key rings, mirrors, etc. Some bright colours and a delicate finish are brought to these original accessories.

'Appliqué' cushion covers

"Appliqué" cushion covers...

The appliqué's technique is a variant of the patchwork's technique: some colourful pieces of materials are sewed on the cover. In Arabic, this ancient technique is called khayameya, coming from the word khayma which means "tent"... because originally it is used in the making of traditional oriental tents. The designs on our cushion covers recall their geometric lines and colours.

Wowed Akhmim's material

The wowed Akhmim's material...

This material is coming from Akhmim, a small village in the south of Cairo. Here the hand weaving is a very ancient activity for many families of this area. The Akhmim's cotton is well known in Egypt for its high quality and weaving delicacy. It is 100% hand wowed. Our various coloured plaids are used as tablecloth, bed cover or sofa cover.

Wowed bags from Mokkatam

Patchworks from Mokkatam

Wowed bags and patchworks from Mokkatam...

These bags and patchworks are handmade with recycled cotton by the women of the Mokkatam area, where are settled the garbage collectors of Cairo. Hundreds of people are living here, collecting and sorting out the garbage.

Some associations are helping these very poor populations, while contributing to the protection of the environment. To help them, people are offered educational programs, literacy lessons, personal and environmental hygiene education, as well as training programs in the waste management techniques and practices. They are also offered a creative and remunerative activity. In this perspective, the young women of Mokkatam are working in the textile, cotton and paper recycling, and in the making and weaving of these very original products.
