The handicraft pottery from Egypt

Pottery is an ancient activity in Egypt. Already in ancient times the Egyptians shaped clay turning it into useful and ornamental objects. Today, the craftsmen's methods of production have hardly changed... clay is still extracted from the ground manually, then shaped, moulded, carved, sculpted and painted by hand. Between each stage firing in the oven is necessary, first to fix the shape, then the colours and finally the glaze or the enamel. Sometimes, up to 3 firings are needed. The length of the first firing is very important, for it is this which determines the degree of darkness of the baked clay.

Each piece of pottery is unique. It is worked by hand for hours according to the inspiration of the potter... who is also an artist! The creations offered at Maison d'Orient are of different styles depending on the way they are produced and where the clay comes from: simply clay pottery, decorated clay, or ceramics with a variety of patterns and colours. A colour for every taste!

Traditional pottery

Traditional pottery...

Made in rural Egyptian areas, this pottery is modelled and fired in the oven at one go. These pieces of pottery are first of all functional (Egyptian families use them everyday to store water, to cook their "foul" or other simmered dishes) but they are also ornamental: the items we offer draw their charm from the "rough" nature of the baked clay.

Fancy pottery

Fancy pottery...

These pretty items of pottery represent scenes of daily country life... Small Nubian houses, traditional villages, dilapidated houses on the border of the Nile, characters, animals, etc. They keep the rough aspect of the baked clay. Only 2 firings in the oven are needed, one after the moulding, the other after the painting of the designs.

Ceramics from Upper Egypt

Ceramics from Upper Egypt...

We offer you a large choice of ceramic items with pretty grey, blue and green shades, with a pearly sheen texture and naïve designs... made in the Louxor area by a Coptic association. The clay they work on is extracted by the craftsmen themselves; it's only after a long "purification" process that the clay can be used to make this high quality pottery.

Ceramics from Alexandria

Ceramics from Alexandria...

To make this delightful ceramics the potters draw their inspiration from the Moroccan or Tunisian style. We discovered them on the coast of Alexandria, a Mediterranean area exposed to the influence of many cultures. Several shapes of dishes, plates, bowls, salad bowls are offered in bright and varied colours to brighten up your table.

Ceramics from El Fayoum

Ceramics from El Fayoum...

These very original potteries come from the learning centres of the oasis of El Fayoum, in the North of Egypt, where young people develop their creative sense while learning the techniques of pottery manufacture. We offer you several styles of dishes and bowls in light shades, with sharply contrasting brightly coloured ethnic drawings... each one is original!
